Profiles - Paul Daniels
Paul Daniels is, without any doubt, one of the greatest
of all magicians and the reason is that he somehow manages
to make every magical effect very entertaining.
He started learning his art at the age of 11 when, on a
wet holiday in Yorkshire, he came across an old book that
included some magic tricks. He was hooked and went home to
pester the local library continuously for more and more magic
books. He now says that it is time he took them back to the
library, but doesn’t think he could afford the fines!
After various jobs, which include showing films in his father’s
cinema, delivering groceries, local government, the army,
and owning a grocery store, he went into show business full
time at the age of 30.
For the first five years he worked in just about every workingmen’s
club and night club in the country, but then went on to perform
his unique style of entertainment in theatres (his show ran
for 14 months in the West End of London), cabaret, the world
of corporate entertainment, and for the rich and famous.
His television shows ruled the ratings year after year on
the BBC TV1 and BBC TV2. As a presenter, he has hosted some
of the most enjoyable game shows on TV - ODD ONE OUT, EVERY SECOND COUNTS and the highly rated WIPE OUT.
There was also the wonderful WIZBIT children's series,
which featured a world of magic and wonder for the younger
viewer
On Radio, he was a BBC Radio 2 DJ for six months and for
years presented a game show called DEALING WITH DANIELS.
Over the last two years, Paul has developed a career in
motivational speaking. In the UK, USA, New Zealand and Australia,
a wide range of business people have taken on board Paul’s
motivational teachings.
More relevant to this production of A Christmas Carol, along
the way he has acted both on television and in the West End,
sung with the great Carl Davis as his ‘piano plonker
backing’, advised on the wizardry in stage shows (CATS, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, English Nation Ballet) and on films.
Incidentally, did you know that Charles Dickens hobby was
magic?
